Integrated Resource Planning in South Africa

Benchmarking of Long-Term formulation using Integer Sampled Chronology versus Linear Relaxation Full Chronology

Planning for new capacity expansion has evolved over the years. Traditionally, these studies were carried out using the load duration curve (LDC) approach to sample chronology and sometimes full chronology. These techniques significantly impact the expansion plans, the fidelity of variable renewable resources, simulation, and computational requirements. Eskom's presentation at Xcelerate Barcelona compared results from sampled chronology with linear relaxation full chronology, investigated the adequacy of the plan, and showed seasonal variation of variable. Energy Planning uses PLEXOS to develop South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and Eskom's Just Energy Transition (JET), these are new generation capacity pathways that consider the existing, committed, and economic retirements of power lines and generators over the next 30 years.
