Smarter Data Center Siting
Learn how advanced modeling identifies optimal sites by evaluating grid capacity, congestion, and energy costs.
The explosion of data driven technologies – primarily artificial intelligence (AI) - has catapulted data centers to the forefront of the energy industry. With AI data centers using 5 – 10x more power than traditional data centers, data center’s appetite for energy is nearly limitless. Data centers are reliant upon reliable energy and must connect to an already strained grid. Meanwhile, utilities and system operators need to ensure that there’s adequate power available for data center growth, while also maintaining resource adequacy for their service areas.
This three-part Energy Exemplar data center webinar series will offer insight to data center developers and investors on how to strategically site and operate data centers with a smart energy strategy. We’ll also look at data centers from the generation side of the equation, with a large US utility sharing best practices for meeting and planning for data center driven load growth. This global webinar series will feature expert-led discussions, regional perspectives across the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, and actionable strategies to optimize data center locations and energy systems for efficiency, sustainability, and long-term growth.
The webinar series will cover:

High performance cloud computing, generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI), and digital transformation are driving a massive surge in data center construction worldwide. Goldman Sachs Research forecasts global power demand from data centers will increase 50% by 2027 and by as much as 165% by the end of the decade (compared with 2023).
The challenges for Data Center companies include identifying suitable locations where ample electrical power can be supplied through the transmission network. Multiple factors add complexity and uncertainty to this task such as grid expansion, energy transition to renewable sources, energy market dynamics, etc. Thus, Data center developers need a forward-looking, data-driven strategy—that provides insights about the suitability of transmission nodes along with sensitivity analysis around the grid capacity, generation mix, and long-term energy market trends.
In this webinar, Dante Recalde will discuss the application of Nodal modelling in PLEXOS for evaluating Load Available Transfer Capacity (ATC) as an important metric for Data Center site selection. ATC represents the additional available quantity of power that can be supplied to a node while considering transmission limits and constraints for the existing and expanded power system. Sensitivity analysis will also be discussed to incorporate uncertainties around demand growth patterns, renewable energy capacities, etc.

AI, cloud, and digital infrastructure are driving record-breaking electricity demand—data centers alone are projected to consume up to 12% of U.S. power by 2028 . For utilities, this isn’t just a statistic—it’s a planning imperative.
In this webinar, we’ll explore how a leading US utility is reimagining grid planning and resource strategy to stay ahead of accelerating data center growth and energy demand. You’ll learn how the industry is addressing mounting challenges like accurately load forecasting, infrastructure limitations, rising transmission congestion, interconnection delays and rising delivery costs while meeting customer expectations.
