MISO’s Futures Process: Capacity Expansion and Resource Adequacy with PLEXOS

The rapid transformation of the power system is creating greater uncertainty around load growth, resource retirements, technology costs, policy requirements, and the future resource mix. To plan effectively across these uncertainties, MISO’s Futures process develops a range of long-term scenarios representing different economic, policy, and technological outcomes. These scenarios provide a foundation for regional transmission planning while also offering valuable insights for utilities, market participants, regulators, and other stakeholders evaluating future resource needs. 

In this webinar, MISO and Energy Exemplar will discuss how PLEXOS supports the Futures process through capacity expansion and resource adequacy analysis. Attendees will learn how MISO uses PLEXOS to evaluate potential resource additions and retirements, identify cost-effective resource portfolios under different assumptions, and assess whether those portfolios can reliably meet future capacity and energy needs. 

The session will provide an inside look at MISO’s planning approach and demonstrate how PLEXOS can perform Capacity Expansion and Resource Adequacy on a large-scale scale system with various constraints and modelling requirements.
