Unique Modelling features in Singapore’s Electricity Market

The Energy Market Company (EMC) has recently developed two models for Singapore's electricity market in collaboration with Energy Exemplar. The short-term model includes EMC's market clearing algorithm, which features co-optimisation of energy, regulation, and reserve products and a unique demand response scheme specific to Singapore. The long-term model builds on the short-term model and incorporates Singapore's energy transition plans until 2050, which rely primarily on hydrogen and electricity imports. Overall, the energy market modeling project for Singapore's electricity market is a comprehensive effort to analyse and understand the complexities of the market, providing valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and investors. By combining advanced modelling techniques with a deep understanding of Singapore's unique energy landscape, the project aims to support the sustainable and reliable development of Singapore's electricity market for years to come.

Impact of Weather Sensitivities in PLEXOS Modeling

The impact of weather on the NEM is becoming more and more important due to the increasing prevalence of renewable generation. At Energy Australia, we recognise the dynamic nature of weather patterns and incorporate the assessment of multiple weather years in our PLEXOS modelling. Our presentation will highlight why we run multiple weather sensitivities and how we utilise these results to inform decisions.

Power System Modelling to Support the Clean Energy Transition in APAC

As the energy sector is undergoing significant transition towards clean energy, key stakeholders including governments, companies and investors are exploring options and pathway to shape a secure and cost-effective transition. At the same time there are concerns over the potential impact of uncertainties in key factors including policies, commodity prices, market and technology development.

DNV has conducted several energy market studies using modelling tools, such as PLEXOS, to assist energy sector stakeholders in APAC in decision-making on technology options, operational practices, investment, policy roadmap and regulatory frameworks. These studies, include for example, power price forecasting, system planning, role of flexibility options including battery and cross-border interconnectors.

Residential District Analysis for Rooftop PVs Integrated with EVs in a Micro-grid

For rapid decarbonisation of urban energy systems, it is critical to utilize rooftop PV as much as possible. However, optimal rooftop PV capacity in a building cannot be enhanced if PV electricity usage is limited only in the building. Thus, district level optimisation in a microgrid is a promising pathway particularly when it is coupled with EV batteries. We apply PLEXOS for this study, and the results will be presented in the case study.

Generation Flexibility (Ramping Adequacy) Assessment for Peninsular Malaysia

The Government of Malaysia has announced a new RE capacity mix target of 70% by 2050 through its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) in August 2023. This high RE target will be mainly driven by solar, capitalizing on the country’s large solar potential.

The increase of solar capacity on the demand side can potentially lead to a pronounced trough in the net demand profile, particularly during public holidays. The prevalence of deep troughs leads to concerns regarding the system's generation portfolio flexibility to efficiently ramp up and down.

This study evaluates the flexibility of future generation system in Peninsular Malaysia in anticipation of substantial ramping requirement, resulting from the increased solar capacity. The analysis utilizes PLEXOS software to simulate a granular 15-minute interval generation operation and detailed generator ramping. Results of the PLEXOS simulation show that the system is flexible enough to cater for the ramping requirements even with high solar capacity in 2030.
