The People Behind Our Success: Reflections from Our Long-Standing Team

As Energy Exemplar celebrates its 25th anniversary, we reflect not just on the milestones and technological advancements that have defined our journey, but more importantly, on the people who have driven our collective success. Our global team has been the backbone of innovation, helping shape a future where energy modeling plays a crucial role in global sustainability. For past, current, and future employees, Energy Exemplar strives to be more than just a workplace – we want it to be a place where individuals can thrive, find fulfillment, and make a real impact.

At the heart of everything we do sit our four core values: Customer Success, Innovation Excellence, One Global Team, and Integrity & Ownership. These values have guided our growth and created a culture where employees can flourish, clients are supported, and innovation is continuously pushed forward. Our growth is a testament to the incredible people behind our success, and today, we want to highlight some of those individuals who have been here to see Energy Exemplar evolve over the years.

The Power of People: Long-standing Employees Who’ve Seen and Driven Growth

What makes Energy Exemplar truly unique is our team - global, diverse, and driven by a shared mission: Empowering Transformative Energy Decisions. Our long-standing employees have not only witnessed our evolution but have played a key role in shaping it.

Take David Adriaens, for example, an IT Developer based in Australia who was instrumental in building the company’s early digital presence and is ensuring seamless access to our products for thousands of customers daily via the customer portal. David has been with Energy Exemplar for 13 years now and has seen the company “grow from a small office to occupying a post office, to commercial buildings and global office expansion.”

Similarly, Magdalena Tietz, Senior Customer Success Manager based in London, has been with Energy Exemplar for 12 years and has witnessed firsthand the growth of both our product and our EMEA team: "When I joined in 2012, we were a team of 5 people in the London office, and now we are close to 100! I’ve been involved in many interesting projects, and I’m really impressed by how the product has evolved."

In the last five years alone, our global team has grown from 132 employees in 2019 to over 550 in 2024. This rapid expansion reflects our drive to attract top talent worldwide, enabling us to better serve our clients and drive innovation.

One Global Team

‘One Global Team’ is not just a phrase - it’s a way of working that connects over 550 employees across multiple continents, most of whom work remotely. Close collaboration across countries and time zones is key to solving the complex challenges our clients face, and our diverse, global talent pool is one of our greatest strengths.

US-based Software Architect Ryan Gardner agrees, “I believe our teams of dedicated individuals make Energy Exemplar what it is.” According to Ryan, who collaborates with various other teams and customers across the globe to expand our cloud offerings, “the products we offer are world-class, but it’s the people backing the products that make the difference.”

Nathan Hanson, Energy Exemplar’s Principal UX Software Engineer, also values the benefits of teamwork in his day-to-day work. He leads the software development team whose primary responsibility is for our Aurora modeling software - “I love being able to lead such a capable development team and see the great things we accomplish together.”

Innovation Excellence

The energy ecosystem is changing rapidly, demanding businesses to innovate constantly. Over the last 25 years, our products and services have not only kept up with this ever-evolving industry but have been “challenging the frontiers of energy modeling”, according to Matthew Bouraee, Senior Director of Business Development in APAC.

Matthew, who is approaching seven years with Energy Exemplar, sees comfort as the enemy of growth and progress and advises to never stop studying. Whether it’s taking advantage of our customer portal (which is filled to the brim with valuable tips, tricks, experiences, and presentations), listening to and solving client challenges, or keeping up with industry news, our teams are encouraged to keep learning and upskilling as part of their professional development.

All the learning culminates during Energy Exemplar’s internal and external Hackathons and interactive product sessions at our Xcelerate Energy Modeling & Simulation summits - showcases of innovation and genius which results in many new product features being developed. Our team strives to improve the overall user experience for clients and build solutions in our tools to overcome the challenges that matter to our clients.

Integrity & Ownership

We realize that innovation is only possible in an environment where people take pride in their work and are able to operate at the highest standards. That is why ‘Integrity & Ownership’ have cemented themselves amongst our core values. We want our colleagues to feel empowered to take responsibility, make decisions they believe in, and own the outcomes. Magdalena Tietz reflects on our inclusive culture and describes it as “a unique environment where everyone has a voice”.

Our colleagues are immensely proud of their work and the resulting achievements and urge anyone passionate about making an impact to dive in headfirst. “I would say come with your insights and experiences and be ready to enthusiastically collaborate with others. We are growing quickly. You'll find many opportunities to excel and maybe even change the world,” says Nathan Hanson.

For Gioia Fusco, a Performance & Culture Business Partner based out of our office in Adelaide for the past seven years, the support from the wider team has enabled both personal and professional growth. Now, she plays a large role in helping colleagues succeed – “I feel proud and fulfilled by being able to onboard new staff and make their transition into Energy Exemplar as seamless and welcoming as possible. It’s rewarding to help set people up for success and ensure they feel supported from day one.”

Customer Success

While our employees are the heart of Energy Exemplar, it’s our customers that drive everything we do. Our products and solutions help clients navigate complex energy landscapes, optimize their resources, and plan for a more sustainable future. Rob Homer, Senior Product Manager and Gas expert based in the US, puts it this way, "we solve hard problems that substantially impact our world in a positive way. It’s been rewarding to see how our solutions help clients make informed decisions during this critical time of energy transition."

For Rob, it was our commitment to energy modeling, solving the problems our customers are interested in, and their resulting success with these solutions that excited him about joining Energy Exemplar in the first place.

Nathan Hanson believes that it's our client-focused approach to building software and services that makes Energy Exemplar unique and different. He not only enjoys serving our clients but finds fulfillment in meeting their needs in a rapidly changing energy climate, “when I know that a software enhancement has helped a client get their job done more efficiently and effectively, I know I’ve done my job well."

Morgan Dennis, Senior Director of Software Engineering, agrees, “it is very fulfilling to be able to enhance our software in a way that we know directly benefits a specific client and brings them significant value in their modeling."  Morgan has been with Energy Exemplar for 15 years and is proud to be working directly with clients on developing software solutions.

We believe that ‘Customer Success’ is critical to our own success, and our client-focused approach has allowed us to build strong, long-lasting relationships with organizations around the world.

A Legacy of People, Innovation, and Purpose

From our long-standing employees who have grown with the company to the new faces who have recently joined us in driving innovation, Energy Exemplar is a place where individuals can find purpose, and growth, and contribute to a better future.

Our mission is Empowering Transformative Energy Decisions. We are proud to be supporting the global energy transition, and fostering an environment where employees and clients alike can succeed. As we move forward, our team will continue to be the architects of innovation, collaboration, and sustainability.
For those considering joining our team, Gioia Fusco offers valuable advice: "Be ready for an exciting career with unlimited growth opportunities, where you’ll continuously learn and make an impact." Ryan Gardner suggests not to "expect to be handed all the answers. There are a lot of unanswered questions and even more questions behind those. Don't let the unknown stop your forward movement."

Here’s to the next 25 years of making a lasting impact - together.
