PLEXOS Basic Training

Integrated Planning Horizons & Chronology

Room: Ballroom 1

PLEXOS offers the capability to integrate and simulate different planning horizons as follows:
  • Long Term Planning (10 - 50+ years)
  • Reliability and System Adequacy (1 - 5 years)
  • Medium Term Schedule (1 - 10 years)
  • Short Term Schedule (1 day - 1 year)
In this session, the possibilities in PLEXOS to run the different horizons separately, as well as together in an integrated approach will be discussed. The simulation settings and chronologies will be detailed, and how PLEXOS handles the different phases will be elaborated.

PLEXOS Basic Training

Resource Adequacy & Reliability

Room: Ballroom 1

With the increase of Renewable energy into the system, the Resource Adequacy and System Reliability are essential metrics that need to be considered in the modelling approach of the system expansion and operation. PLEXOS offers the functionality to include and analyze this metrics in both long term expansion studies and medium term and short term operations.
In this session, we will discuss the Project Assessment of the System Adequacy (PASA) in PLEXOS, as well as some practical examples of Resource Adequacy and Reliability.

10:30 - 12:00

PLEXOS Intermediate/Advanced Training

RTC Renewables & Storage, PPA/Energy Import

Room: Ballroom 2

With the introduction of Renewables into the system, more countries enfore different rules and obligations to ensure assets are able to provide Round-The-Clock (RTC) uninterrupted power in line with the contractual obligations. Furthermore, companies need to assess and mitigate the risk when analyzing different contracts and PPA contracts.
In this session, the modelling of an RTC model in PLEXOS with different contractual obligations will be presented. The risk analysis and the management of different contracts and PPA contracts will be discussed.

Custom & Policy Driven Constraints

Room: Ballroom 1

With the ongoing energy transition, there is an emphasis on many different policies and technical limitations required to be considered in the modelling and simulations. PLEXOS offers the flexibility to model and simulate such customized and advanced constraints.
In this session, the modelling of custom constraints will be discussed and the application for different policies or obligations will be presented.

13:00 - 14:30

PLEXOS Intermediate/Advanced Training

Markets, Financial Contracts & Bid-Based Modeling

Room: Ballroom 2

The deragulation of the energy markets and the technological breakthroughs in the energy transition bring many more stakeholders in the energy markets. Many countries are moving to and some have already introduced completely deregulated market structures where different players can freely participate in the markets. PLEXOS provides and engine to model and simulate the energy market behaviour and offers the functionality to maximize the company's portfolio profits, or provide a market clearing engine as well as balancing optimization approach to the market operators.
In this session, the modelling of Markets and the approach to bid-based modelling in PLEXOS will be discussed.

Modeling Uncertainty for Renewables & BESS

Room: Ballroom 1

The increased penetration of Renewables brings many uncertainties into the system. Very often, Batteries (BESS) or other energy storage systems are required to guarantee the uninterrupted supply for such intermitted energy sources. PLEXOS provides the functionality to model and consider the uncertainty in the decision making process.
In this session, the modelling of uncertainties, renewables and BESS will be discussed. The use of Monte Carlo sampling and Stochastic optimization will be presented. Although the practical examples will be mostly focused on renewables and BESS, the same modelling approach of uncertainty can apply to for ex. Gas Prices, Load, Market Prices, etc.

14:45 - 17:00

PLEXOS Intermediate/Advanced Training

Gas & Power2X, Hydrogen & NH3

Room: Ballroom 2

Modelling integrated systems including Power, Gas and Hydrogen are becoming the new norm as a more holistic approach to the energy future. PLEXOS offers the functionality to capture the different commodities and their infrastructure and processes in a single modelling approach. It can further accomodate the modelling of ammonia or any other Power2X commodity that may be required.
In this session, the approach to modelling Gas and Hydrogen system will be presented from different aspects and different long term planning and short term operations horizons.
