Future Energy Policy Planning Studies - Creative Solutions!

How can we work towards long term multi value planning? RTO changes are being forced to look at longer term horizons shifting Utility focus from reactive to proactive in a fast paced transition. PLEXOS as a tool can be used to create new standards of modeling for high dollar transmission infrastructure upgrades, import/export capabilities, and necessary generation interconnection ties. Economic analysis adds a layer of depth to bridge the gap of historical silos adding resilience to high load growth. Using tools like PLEXOS can give foresight into unblocking capacity and co optimization for trending C&I customers like Data Centers. This session will be collaborative in nature to challenge traditional ideas and usage of tools like PLEXOS.

Co-Optimization & the Hydrogen Economy

Our world’s reliance on fossil fuels is the biggest obstacle to cleaner, safer, accessible, and affordable energy. It’s time to focus on not just dreaming up, but simulating and proving all the possible solutions to our better energy future with data. Modeling technology is here to help pave the way.

It’s 2023 and we are long past seeing energy sectors as silos – gas, power, heat, etc. are all irrevocably linked. A change in one sector affects the other. So, let’s reflect that in our models and find optimal solutions to interconnected energy systems, to enhance overall performance and synergy. By coupling energy sectors, energy systems become more resilient, diverse, and less reliant on a single source of energy or infrastructure.

The Future of IRP: ISP! Integrated System Planning

To properly support the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable and digital energy industry, utility and market planners need to adopt a more integrated and holistic view of the planning processes.  Silo planning and iterative processes will no longer provide acceptable expansion plans.  ISP is a new process for optimizing infrastructure build decisions, considering generation, transmission, energy storage, renewables, V2G, hydrogen and gas systems, among others.  It unifies planning, modeling and optimization across multiple business units considering each corporate objective, regulatory requirements, customer needs and market trends.

Integrated System Planning: Emerging New Solutions to Answer Energy Questions

As the traditional silos of generation, transmission, distribution, demand side/distributed resources comingle, Integrated System Planning (ISP) is gaining ground among utility planners as a way to solve new energy questions. ISP strategies call for new approaches to energy planning through development of comprehensive strategies using a diverse portfolio of energy assets.  Siemens PTI has been in the forefront ISP development for several years, using quantitative analysis to include emerging ISP requirements such as eMobility penetration, flex ramping backup for intermittent resources, and distribution electrification.

This session will show how Siemens PTI translates quantitative analysis into comprehensive integrated energy solutions for emerging energy planning problems.

Fueling Collaboration and Decision Making, the Power of PLEXOS Cloud

As the energy industry landscape continues to evolve, the need to embrace new technologies is critical for a successful Energy Transition. There is a need to extend to the cloud to leverage scalable compute for improved simulation throughput as well as new approaches to collaboration, data analytics, insights and decision making. PLEXOS Cloud is Energy Exemplar’s newest solution that helps expand the power of PLEXOS with new capabilities for editing data, managing versions, running simulations, evaluating output, and communicating with managers and stakeholders.

This session will cover all these capabilities and talk about the key use cases for how PLEXOS Cloud can empower analysts and managers across the entire Energy Enterprise.
