Long-term planning processes at MISO have resulted in three “Future” outlooks for market participants to consider. The Michigan Public Service Commission is considering using MISO Futures for state utility integrated resource planning parameters. This presentation will provide an overview of Consumer’s Energy’s in-depth review of the MISO Futures. Specifically, the presentation will discuss CE’s integration of carbon reduction targets, electrification assumptions, existing unit retirements, and a focus on reliability through a long-term capacity expansion process.

PJM Senior Lead Economist Emmanuele Bobbio will dive into the interaction between forward and spot markets, and how that interaction will determine the speed of the energy transition. He utilizes a model of the dynamics that result from individual decisions of profit-maximizing investors in forward or capacity markets based on their expectations of future costs and profits from spot markets to assess the implication for various mechanisms used to procure clean energy on entry and exit decisions, reliability, costs, profits, and emissions.

This session will cover three pillars of electrification: transportation, buildings, and industry and the implications for electric and natural gas demand. The pace of electrification will be driven by multiple forces including policy, corporate ESG, consumer demand, economics, and technology. The session will include a discussion of a framework used to model the pathways to decarbonization.

Subhasis Ray will discuss the Battery Energy Storage Systems market in general as well as its outlook. Additionally, learn about Apex’s business and history, and how the organization is looking at BESS and what they are doing with it going forward.

This presentation will highlight the use of PLEXOS to help inform the ongoing non-thermal accreditation reforms and the Regional Resource Assessment. The topics include seasonal loss of load expectation modeling, application of the effective load carrying capacity capability method to non-thermal resources, and automation processes.

Zamiyad Dar, Senior Strategist of Portfolio Planning will present his work with Energy Exemplar to create a conversion tool to transform the Aurora model into a similar production cost model in PLEXOS. While both Aurora and PLEXOS are production cost modeling software, they differ in data input, modeling of production cost data, simulation settings, and output reporting. Dar will explore the approach and methodology used to break a production cost database into its components in order to convert Entergy’s Aurora model into a corresponding PLEXOS model.

George Givens and Jon Ecker will discuss Energy Exemplar's efforts to improve the Analyst’s workflow. Investments in a modern infrastructure for data collection, scrubbing and transformation from raw public data into Simulation Ready Datasets enable our Market Analysts to spend more time analyzing results and less time managing model inputs. This in turn allows our Analysts to become Expert Advisors who create Insights in addition to top quality data inputs. They will touch on the improvements you will see as data customers, the new reporting capabilities in PLEXOS Cloud and some new Insights products coming in 2023.

In this session, Goran Vukojevic will discuss how go2power consulting leverages PLEXOS to support TSOs in Europe for system adequacy forecasting, transmission analysis and renewable integration studies. Learn how the PLEXOS model was built using generation and demand forecast data and solar and wind profiles stored in a variety of platforms. The session will also discuss key learnings for future transmission analyses.

An Overview of New England’s modeling features and goals with PLEXOS during the EPCET pilot study. Includes a discussion of how New England power system features and issues are being modeled in PLEXOS.

In this presentation, Anant Kumar of Charles River Associates and Samrat Datta will discuss an innovative generation flexibility analysis that Entergy conducted in partnership with Charles River Associates.  Entergy has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with an interim goal of reducing the utility emissions rate to 50 percent of Entergy’s 2000 emission rate.  To achieve this goal, significant changes to Entergy’s largest scope 1 emissions category – power generation – are necessary, including the inclusion of intermittent renewable resources.  As numerous studies around the world have demonstrated, energy adequacy (ramping and load following) can be a significant concern with intermittent renewable resources.  This presentation will review the process framework of statistical analyses to assess system ramping needs, used by Entergy and Charles River Associates, accompanied by testing of flexible generation capacity adequacy to meet real-time imbalances using Aurora’s sub-hourly production cost modeling capabilities.
